How to Use HSA and FSA Funds at Mett Wellness
Some Mett Wellness products show a Truemed option on the product page. Truemed is a separate company that checks whether a purchase may qualify for payment with HSA or FSA funds. Not everyone qualifies, and your HSA or FSA plan administrator makes the final decision. This page explains how it works and what the IRS rules say.
Which Products Show the Truemed Option
You will see the Truemed option on our supplements (Magnesium Glycinate Capsules, Ashwagandha with Piperine Capsules, the Magnesium + Ashwagandha Bundle and Superfood Reds Drink Mix), on our whey and hemp heart protein, and on our three at-home test kits. It does not appear on tallow skin care.
Seeing the option on a product doesn't mean the product is HSA or FSA eligible. It means you can ask Truemed to review whether your purchase may qualify.
How Truemed Works
Truemed describes two ways to use it.
- Pay through Truemed at checkout. If Truemed is offered as a payment option, choose it and you go to Truemed's checkout. You fill out a short health survey and enter your HSA or FSA card. An independent, licensed clinician reviews your answers. If you qualify, Truemed issues a letter of medical necessity and your payment goes through. If you don't qualify, Truemed says the order is canceled and you aren't charged.
- Pay with a regular card, then ask for reimbursement. Pay with a credit or debit card, then complete the survey from your order confirmation page or email on the same day you order. If a clinician approves it, you get a letter of medical necessity by email. You send the letter and your receipt to your HSA or FSA administrator for reimbursement.
You don't need an in-person visit. Truemed says a letter is typically valid for 12 months from the date it is issued, and that it does not guarantee any purchase will qualify.
What the IRS Says
HSA and FSA money can only pay for qualified medical expenses. The IRS says supplements count as a medical expense only when a medical practitioner recommends them to treat a specific medical condition diagnosed by a physician. Purchases for general health and wellness are not medical expenses.
The IRS has also warned (news release IR-2024-65, March 2024) that a note from a doctor based only on self-reported health information doesn't turn a personal purchase into a medical expense.
Your plan administrator decides whether a purchase qualifies. Check with them before you pay with HSA or FSA funds, and keep your receipt and your letter of medical necessity together in case they ask for them.

HSA and FSA Questions
Are Mett Wellness products HSA or FSA eligible?
Not automatically. Under IRS rules, supplements are a medical expense only when a medical practitioner recommends them to treat a specific diagnosed condition. Whether a test kit counts is up to your plan administrator. Tallow skin care isn't eligible. Some buyers qualify through Truemed's review and some don't.
What does Truemed do?
Truemed runs a short health survey. An independent, licensed clinician reviews your answers and may issue a letter of medical necessity for your purchase. Truemed is a separate company from Mett Wellness.
Does a letter of medical necessity mean my plan will pay?
No. Your HSA or FSA administrator has the final say, and some administrators have their own paperwork rules. Truemed says its letter supports a claim but doesn't override the administrator's decision.
What should I keep?
Save your order receipt and your letter of medical necessity together. Your administrator may ask for both.
What if I don't qualify?
Truemed will let you know. If you used Truemed at checkout, Truemed says the order is canceled and you aren't charged, so you can order again with a regular card. If you already paid with a regular card, keep your order and don't submit it for reimbursement.
Who sees my survey answers?
Truemed handles the survey. Truemed says your health information is used only for the clinical review and is kept confidential. For details, see Truemed's own help pages.
